Galena: PbS Lead Mineral and Ore Preparation

Review galena as PbS, its high density, association with sphalerite, role in lead-silver ores and liberation requirements.

Short answer

Galena is the dense PbS sulfide and the principal ore mineral of lead. It can occur with sphalerite, pyrite, chalcopyrite and carbonate gangue, so preparation depends on the mineral assemblage.

What is Galena and how does it occur in ore?

Galena is recognizable by cubic cleavage and high density, but the key processing information is grain locking rather than crystal habit. Some galena is argentiferous, and the actual host of silver should be confirmed analytically.

Why are galena and sphalerite often evaluated together?

In lead-zinc ores the two minerals can be finely intergrown. Grinding aims to achieve enough liberation without unnecessary overgrinding of either phase, because downstream selective flotation depends on that balance.

Which behaviour matters during ore preparation?

Galena’s high density can influence gravity-separation behaviour, but density contrast alone does not guarantee effective separation. Particle size, shape and gangue distribution must also be considered.

Fine galena particles can be more sensitive to oxidation and slime effects. Sample freshness and surface condition after grinding matter for downstream separation.

Which inputs should be verified?

  • Galena-sphalerite locking
  • Lead and silver mineralogy
  • Particle-size and density distribution
  • Sulfide gangue proportion
  • Flotation feed fineness
