A significant share of indium is recovered as a byproduct from zinc processing and refining residues. Its distribution in sphalerite links it directly to preparation of the primary zinc concentrate.

Why is indium associated with sphalerite?
In some zinc ores, indium occurs within the sphalerite crystal structure or in related fine phases. Its process significance therefore depends on mineral host as well as bulk grade.
What target controls crushing and grinding?
Mechanical preparation is designed primarily to liberate zinc minerals from gangue and produce suitable feed for concentration. Indium distribution is tracked through that primary separation.
Why does byproduct recovery occur later?
Indium is commonly recovered from residues or intermediate streams generated during zinc refining. Ore grinding and indium refining are therefore not the same processing step.
