Sphalerite is ZnS and the principal zinc ore mineral worldwide. Its colour and iron content vary, and association with galena, pyrite and chalcopyrite makes selective preparation important.

What is Sphalerite and how does it occur in ore?
Sphalerite can host variable amounts of Fe, Cd, In, Ge and other elements. Bulk zinc grade alone is therefore not enough when by-products or penalty elements matter.
Why is sphalerite connected to gallium, germanium and indium resources?
Some critical elements can substitute into sphalerite or be recovered as by-products of zinc processing. That does not make every sphalerite ore a critical-metal ore; actual distribution must be measured.
Which behaviour matters during ore preparation?
In lead-zinc ores, grinding targets liberation of sphalerite and galena from each other and from gangue. Excess fines can make selectivity and water management more difficult.
Iron content and surface oxidation can change sphalerite flotation behaviour. Representative samples and fresh ground products should be used for testing.
Which inputs should be verified?
- Sphalerite-galena locking
- Iron and trace-element distribution
- Zinc distribution by size fraction
- Liberation size
- Surface oxidation
